What will be seen in 2025
Last spring in Salzburg, Austria, I jumped around the fountain outside the Mirabel Palace.
Others did.
60 years ago, Maria and the von Trapp children were dancing around the castle’s Pegasus Fountain, singing “Do-Re-Mi,” one of “The Sound of Music’s” most famous songs.

A film starring Julie Andrews was released in March 1965. To mark the film’s 60th anniversary, the city is celebrating with tours and events throughout the year.

Film locations in Salzburg
The Mirabell Gardens is one of the many film productions that tourists can see in Salzburg. Beyond the Pegasus Falls is a small wonderland of dwarves, with 320-year-old statues of devious-looking dwarves, who made a cameo appearance in the film.
To follow the film from the beginning, go to the ancient Benedictine Abbey of Nöneberg, dating back to 714, where Maria fought to become a nun. The views are breathtaking.

Follow Maria’s path from the abbey and enter the Old Town through the arches from Salzburg Cathedral to Residsplatz, where she splashes in the fountain before boarding a bus outside Salzburg to the von Trapp home.
Other places in Salzburg include the Mozartsteg, a small footbridge Maria and her children cross while singing “My Favorite Things”. A market to visit is Kajetanerplatz, which still hosts a farmers market every Friday.

Seeing the “hill”.

Remember when Maria and all the kids capsize their boat? The Great Palace was built in 1736 Fronburg Castle (now part of the Mozarteum University of Salzburg), for exterior and interior engravings. And, as an added bonus, Leopoldskron Palace has been converted into a luxury hotel, so guests may recognize some of the interior nooks and crannies from the film.
