“We can be a little more sensible about it” – Gautam Gambhir slams media on Rohit Sharma Saga in BGT 2024-25 5th Test.
Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir lashed out at the media over captain Rohit Sharma’s class during the fifth and final Test in Sydney, Australia. The 43-year-old man pointed out that the media should avoid unnecessary rumors and follow them sensibly.
This comment came amid reports of differences between Gambhir and Rohit in selecting the playing XI. In the fourth Test in Melbourne, the reports indicated that the players did not follow the plan of the team management.
Gambhir told reporters at the post-match press conference (via Indian Express):
“I want to say that a lot has been written and a lot has been said. At least we can be a little smarter about it. Captain, even captain, if a leader takes this decision ahead of the team, I don’t think there is any problem with that. So many things have been said and many things have been said…”
Amidst much talk in the media, Rohit Sharma broke his silence about playing the final Test in Melbourne.
“There are very honest players in our dressing room” – Gautam Gambhir backs Rohit Sharma’s omission in playing XI for 5th Test.
Gautam Gambhir has defended captain Rohit Sharma’s playing XI for the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. Indirectly, Rohit called on him to give up his unselfish position to accommodate a player who will play closely with the team’s interests on the line.
The comments came as Rohit conceded just 31 runs in his five innings at an impressive average of 6.2. The 37-year-old scored 164 runs in his last 15 innings at an average of 10.93, including a half-century.
Gambhir told reporters during the same interaction:
“In the end, the international team does not sit there, the most important thing is the team and the most important is the country. Every individual knows that his game and his hard work are the most important thing for any sport and any profession.”
Because in the end it is not my team or your team but the country’s team. Like I said, I believe there are very loyal players in our dressing room who know how hungry they are and how the team can move forward with their contributions.
Gambhir added that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will not get any special treatment because of their presence in the team.
But yes, as far as my question goes, my biggest responsibility is to be fair to everyone in the group. Not just one or two individuals. If I am not fair to just two or three individuals, then I am being honest with myself and not others.
The men in blue, however, lost the BGT 2024-25 series by a margin of 1-3. This was their second straight defeat following a 0-3 drubbing in the home series in New Zealand.
