President-elect Trump will sign an executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants, White House officials said Monday — one of a series of border-related orders he’ll sign to overhaul U.S. immigration policy and border security, and that would include a freeze on refugee resettlement for at least four months.

Officials told reporters at a press conference that Trump would sign an executive order clarifying language in the 14th Amendment and saying the federal government “will not grant automatic birthright citizenship to children of illegal aliens born in the United States.”

The 14th Amendment states that “all persons born or naturalized within the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state in which they reside.”

Some legal experts say such a move is a constitutional change and cannot be done by executive order. The move is sure to face a court challenge from civil rights groups and immigrant advocates.

Trump advisers and some conservative legal scholars have argued that the proposal to grant birthright citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants is a misreading of the amendment.

A second order directs U.S. troops to the southern and northern borders under the U.S. Northern Command and “directs the military to strategically plan our borders and territorial integrity.”

On Monday, immigration officials also said Trump would sign an executive order that would suspend refugee resettlement for four months and end the ability of immigrants to apply for asylum by creating an expedited removal process.

“We will end asylum and close the border to illegals,” said one official.

In addition, Trump will order the Attorney General to seek the death penalty for murder Law enforcement and capital crimes committed by illegal immigrants, officials said.

Trump is expected to sign 10 executive orders related to border security and immigration as soon as Monday.
