President Donald Trump has threatened to impose “severe sanctions” on Russia and tariffs on imports if the country does not reach a deal to end its nearly three-year war in Ukraine.
Trump’s social media warning on his third day in office called out Russian President Vladimir Putin.
If we don’t make a “deal” and in the near future I have no choice but to impose high taxes, tariffs and sanctions on everything Russia sells to the United States and various participating countries. Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump wrote: “Let’s end this war that would never have started if I were president! We can do it the easy way or the hard way – and the easy way is always the best.”
“Now is the time” to make a deal. No more lives must be lost!!!”
Trump has repeatedly said that if elected to a second consecutive term in the White House, he could end the war in Ukraine in one day. The war began in February 2022 with the invasion of Russia.
“They are dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I will do that – I will do it in 24 hours,” he said in May 2023.
That was not the case during Monday’s inauguration.
But Trump’s message to Russia on Wednesday signaled his intention to deploy the kind of economic weapons he has threatened against U.S. allies such as Mexico and Canada if those countries do not comply.
“I don’t want to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people, and I’ve always had a very good relationship with President Putin – and this is despite the radical left’s Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Let’s not forget that Russia helped us win World War II, losing nearly 60,000,000 lives in the process.”
“All that being said, I’m doing Russia, whose economy is collapsing, and President Putin, a huge favor. Now, stand up and stop this ridiculous war!” Trump wrote.
“It’s only going to get worse.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in December that his country had accounted for 43,000 soldiers killed in action and another 370,000 wounded.
In addition, Ukraine estimated that 198,000 Russian soldiers were killed and more than 550,000 soldiers were wounded.
