Tensions are brewing between the outgoing Biden administration and Trump after the president placed a permanent ban on new oil and gas drilling in the 625 million-acre area. The Biden administration also announced new standards for gas water heaters, which Trump criticized as “worse” than the oil drilling ban.

“One other thing he did yesterday that was worse in many ways — it’s hard to believe it could be worse — is he wants to take all the gas heaters out of your house and your apartment. He basically wants them replaced with electric heaters. Trump said at a Mar-a-Lago press conference last week. I know, this guy loves electricity.

“We’re going to end the electric car mandate,” he added, criticizing Biden’s support for green energy as he tried to extol the virtues of gas heaters and bathroom faucets.

The planks on the energy platform seem to align well with the priorities of the American Petroleum Institute (API), which released a policy roadmap last year in an open letter to the incoming president and Congress, which outlined major issues in 2025 and beyond. Assuring America’s Energy Leadership.

API President and CEO Mike Sommers told FOX Business in November that there are some steps the administration can take to right the ship during Trump’s second term.

“As governor of a high-producing state, Doug Burgum has demonstrated a deep understanding of the importance of harnessing America’s energy potential,” Somers said. Once confirmed, we look forward to working with him to implement a new five-year offshore leasing program and remove barriers to offshore leasing to fully exploit our nation’s natural resources.

Somers said he looks forward to working with Wright once the API is confirmed to “strengthen America’s geopolitical strength by lifting DOE’s freeze on LNG export permits and ensuring American energy is open to our partners around the world.”

API’s five-point policy plan outlines industry priorities for the administration and the Republican-controlled House and Senate, including:

Protecting consumer choice

  • Cancel the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tailpipe regulations
  • Delete the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s corporate average fuel economy ratings
  • EPA’s ban/repeal of California’s Advanced Clean Cars II Act

How Trump’s return to the White House will affect the auto industry

Strengthening America’s geopolitical strength

  • Department of Energy (DOE) pauses LNG permits

  • Ensure that American energy is open to the international market

Using our natural resources

  • New Ocean Energy Administration launches five-year offshore leasing program.
  • Repeal restrictive marine lease laws, starting with the Bureau of Land Management Conservation and Landscape Health Regulation.
  • End the EPA’s methane levy, which misinterprets the intent of Congress and does little more than raise production costs for U.S. oil and natural gas.

Improve our licensing system

  • Amendment of the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA).
  • Improving the Clean Water Act
  • Advance judicial reform
  • Repeal the Biden-era NEPA regulations

Developing a reasonable tax policy

  • Maintain a corporate tax rate of 21% to ensure global competitiveness
  • Maintaining and extending tax incentives for domestic infrastructure investment
  • Protect important international tax provisions

Billionaire energy executive Harold Hamm, founder and chairman of Continental Resources, told Fox Business’ Maria Batiromo that Biden has always been anti-energy.

“To be honest, he’s been at war on oil and gas for his entire existence. In the Senate and through the presidency, that’s who he is. So we’ve got leadership that knows how to accelerate it. Accelerate exploration in this country,” Hamm said.
