Top NJ comptroller suddenly resigns and removed from state voter registrations following residency

Tiffany Williams Brewer, who resigned from the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation shortly after the regulatory agency announced her appointment as chief executive, took the sudden step. “Monmouth County election officials take the integrity of the election process very seriously,” Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon said in a statement. “Upon referral by the County Clerk, the Superintendent/Registrar of Elections will investigate the matter and submit it to the Monmouth County Attorney’s Office for review and proceed to remove this individual from the voter rolls in Monmouth.”

Monmouth County Chief Elections Officer Christopher P. Siciliano told Fox News Digital that Williams removed Beer from the voter registry, but did not meet the requirements to register in New Jersey. He pointed out that she could be reinstated if she provided evidence that she met the requirements.

The purpose of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation is to investigate “waste, fraud and misuse of state tax dollars,” according to the state’s website. Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, appointed Williams Brewer to the commission in 2022.

“Ms. Brewer previously served as chair of the four-member commission from 2022 to 2024. She served on an interim basis in SCI’s day-to-day leadership role following the death of former Executive Director Chad W. Williams Brewer is an assistant professor of law at Howard University Law School, according to the school’s website.

In a statement she posted on LinkedIn about her resignation from the state agency, Williams-Brea spoke of her residency status and work in academia.

“My dual residency in Maryland and New Jersey has always been transparent and in full compliance with all relevant laws. It has never interfered with my activities at SCI or caused misconduct. Let me be clear – my residency status has never gone NJ First Act,” she said.

“While I am committed to public service, recent events, including media exposure of employee-led misconduct, have created a toxic climate for me to continue in this role. It undermines the integrity of the S.I.I., forcing me to resign,” she said in another part of her lengthy statement.

John P. Lacy, chairman of the New Jersey State Bureau of Investigation, said in a statement to Fox News Digital that the agency is looking for a new executive director.

“For nearly 60 years, the State Commission of Investigation has stood as the only independent whistleblower agency in New Jersey investigating and issuing reports on organized crime and the waste, fraud and misuse of taxpayer dollars. SCI has a proud history of effective work and a tireless commitment to serving the public interest. Following the recent resignation of the former executive, we are serving as active guardians in New Jersey accountability and good governance,” Lacy said in a statement.

“The Commission is actively working to find a new Executive Director and has posted the job on the SCI website and several other public websites. Additionally, with the recent appointments made by Governor Murphy, the Commission is now fully staffed with four Commissioners and a newly appointed Chair. John P. Lacy remains committed to our core values ​​and will continue to serve New Jersey residents with the highest level of integrity under new leadership.
