Thousands of acres have burned in LA.
Wildfires are raging across Los Angeles, with high winds and extremely dry conditions fueling thousands of acres of land.
Firefighters are still unable to contain their numbers, a fire official told the BBC on Thursday, as they are still spreading rapidly.
The largest wildfire in the high-profile Pacific Palisades area is the most destructive in Los Angeles history. Over 5,300 buildings were destroyed.
It’s a rapidly changing situation – these maps and pictures show how the fires have spread, where they are and what they look like from space.
Among the previously destroyed buildings are several unique properties on the Malibu waterfront.

Five fires are still burning in the Los Angeles area.
- The Palisades Fire: The largest active fire is burning between Santa Monica and Malibu. Area burned: More than 20,000 acres. Over 5,300 buildings were destroyed. At least 30,000 people have been displaced.
- Eaton Fire: Second large fire burning north of Pasadena. Area burned: At least 13,690 acres and more than 4,000 structures damaged or destroyed. Five people were reported dead.
- Hust Fire: Northeast of the city. Area burned: 850 acres.
- Lydia Fire: Reported in hills north of Los Angeles. Area burned: 350 acres.
- Kenneth Fire: In the West Hills area, north of the Palisades. It started Thursday afternoon and has burned 960 hectares so far.
Three fires have been brought under control.
Woodley Fire: A small fire was reported at a local park. Area burned: 30 acres.
Olive fruit Fire: First small fire in Ventura County, about 50 miles (80 km) east of Los Angeles. Area burned: 11 acres.
Sunset Fire: Reported in the historic Hollywood Hills area near several famous landmarks, including the Hollywood sign. Area burned: 43 acres.
How did the Palisades fire spread?
The map above shows how quickly the Palisades fire has spread and gotten stronger in just a few hours. Just after 2pm on Tuesday, it covered 772 acres and roughly tripled in size within four hours.
More than 1,400 firefighters are battling the blaze, which now covers nearly 20,000 hectares and thousands of people have been evacuated.
The Eaton Fire quickly grew from about 1,000 acres to 13,000 acres on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of thousands of people.
Both the Palisades and Eaton fires are visible from space, as shown in the satellite images below.
The maps below show that nearly 20,000 buildings may have been damaged or destroyed — and many more could be at risk depending on the fire’s spread.
How does the size of the Palisades fire compare to New York and London?
We superimposed it on maps of New York and London to determine the extent of the Palisades fire.
As you can see at 23:00 PST, January 8, (07:00 GMT, January 9), it can be compared to the UK capital stretching from Clapham to Greenwich, or the vast areas of Lower Manhattan and Queens. .
Effects of the Eaton Fire
The Palisades Fire is not the only area that has wreaked havoc on Los Angeles neighborhoods.
These images show the extent of the devastation caused by the Eton fire in the Altadena neighborhood.
The Jewish Temple in Pasadena was destroyed by the Eaton fire. The center’s website says it has been in operation since 1941 and has a congregation of over 400 families.
