Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket, New Glenn, successfully lifted off from Florida early Thursday after its first launch attempt was cleared Wednesday.

This flight is Bezos’ attempt to enter the private space race. A successful launch opens competition to Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The new Glenn made its first ascent to the stars Thursday morning and Blue Origin, the key objective of the first flight, was just to get into orbit.

“To repeat our mission – this is our first flight and we are very prepared for it. But no amount of ground tests or mission simulations will be a substitute for flying this rocket,” Blue Origin said in X.

“Our key goal today is to reach orbit safely. Anything short of that is icing on the cake. We know landing the booster on our first test beach in the Atlantic Ocean is ambitious – but we’re going there. Whatever happens, we know. The knowledge.” We will learn, refine and apply to our next startup,” he said.
