Washington Capitals and Team USA star TJ O’Shea had to return to social media on Monday to defend a post he wrote about President Donald Trump.

Oshie posted a simple graphic of Trump, followed by the message “America is Back” in all caps. Oshie captioned the post, “God Bless America,” with a US flag emoji.

“Every day with the breath in my body I will fight for you,” Trump’s message in the caption read. “I will not rest until we deliver the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve. This will truly be America’s Golden Age.”

Well, the commenters under Oshie’s post weren’t very friendly, leading him to defend the post and his patriotism.

“That added up fast!” Oshie wrote on X: “To be clear, I love America and Americans from both sides and always will. Yes, you little poets in the negative comments. I prefer to respect everyone until you prove otherwise. It’s fine if they yell at me on the internet, even if I don’t see the honor in it and it sounds stupid.

Some commenters said Oshie’s daughters were upset when Trump took over the presidency, and Oshie had time to shout back.

“Thank you for your concern for my daughters,” Oshie added. “All four of my children grow up with parents who support them, tell them they love them every day, teach them to be strong and above all to be good and kind people.”

And there were commenters who said they were going to throw Oshie’s jersey in the trash.

“PS to those jerseys out there… maybe just remove the name and number. Remember the name on the front is a hell of a lot more important than the back. I love you today and always! God bless America.”

In the year Oshie, who won a Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018, has played the past nine seasons in the NHL in the nation’s capital, serving as an alternate captain this year.

He was the 24th overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft to the St. Louis Blues, where he spent his first seven seasons.
