Shakur Stevenson and Keyshawn Davis: A friendship that will never fight
Shakur Stevenson reiterated this week that he wouldn’t fight his good friend Keyshawn Davis no matter what money he was offered. The WBC lightweight champion said that he and Keishaun used to go to the gym when they were young and beat different fighters. They became close.
Stevenson says he and Keyshawn do. “They took over the sport of boxing.“So far, neither of these two fighters has shown the ability to dominate the sport. Shakur has a style that’s outdated, boring Mayweather on his last legs, and Keyshawn has a similar style.”
Weight bully?
The difference with Keyshawn Davis (12-0, 8 KOs) is that he’s arguably bigger for the lightweight division and should be fighting at 147 instead of 135. If he has to fight at the welterweight position with killers like Keyshawn Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennisthe work will have no value.
Keyshawn’s top promoters would never agree to let Boots fight because he would have no chance of success and their investment in his career would be wasted.
Fighting the younger and older guys in the lighter divisions, Keyshawn has a shot at becoming a champion at a young age but not a star. If a fight at welterweight moves up, it’s food for the fighters in this division.
“When we were dating, Keyshawn and I would go to every gym, and we’d hit it off. We used to go to the gym and beat[the fighters]up.” Shakur Stevenson told Cigar Talk. YouTube A channel that explains why he won’t fight Keyshawn Davis
“Any gym. Like the top level. When I went to Spar Lomachenko, Keyshawn was there beating Olympic gold medalists. Keyshawn was always with me. Once you get to that level, we knew this day would come.”
“It was just a matter of time. We both knew how to beat (fighters) and dominate boxing. Now, the fans are going to question us and see us fight,” Shakur said.
Undefeated, untested
Keyshawn missed out on the 2020 Olympics, losing to Andy Cruz of Cuba. It wasn’t a close fight. As great talent, Keyshawn and Shakur have yet to defeat top ranked fighters. Shakur has beaten much-washed veterans and smaller fighters Oscar Valdez and Jamel Herring, but he hasn’t faced anyone at the top level. This is why Floyd chose to defend Schofield. Shakur is desperate.
He was calling Vassily Lomachenko and Gervonta Davis, but was getting nothing from either fighter. One explanation for this is Stevenson’s boring style. He gets booed by fans every time he fights, and has no fans outside of his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.
Keyshawn had never fought anyone better in his time and showed no desire to avenge his four losses to Andy Cruz. He seems keen to take the easy way out, WBO lightweight champion Denis Berinchik next month on February 14. Davis said he believes it will happen when he wins the WBO title against WBA champion Gervonta Davis. This sounds like a pipe dream.
“It’s not about the money,” said Shakur Turki al-Sheikh when he was told that he and Keisha would be offered a lot of money to fight. “It’s not about the money. I’m not one of those (fighters) that money makes me, bro.
It’s too bad Shakur doesn’t want to fight his friend Keyshawn because that would probably be his best choice for a big fight at lightweight. This fight wouldn’t be for Stevenson if Turkey Tank Davis didn’t offer mega millions. IBF lightweight champion Vassily Lomachenko will not fight Shakur because he is approaching 37 years old and does not want to fight a runner at this late stage of his career. If he was smaller, Loma would have taken that fight in seconds. But now it doesn’t seem possible.
Once you remove Tank and Lomachenko from the formula, Keyshawn is all that’s left for Shakur. But here William Zepeda doesn’t give Shakur the same payday that fights with Loma and Gervonta do.
