Sachin Tendulkar explains why he asked BCCI to stage the final Test at the Wankhede Stadium.

Former Indian national cricket team batsman Sachin Tendulkar has revealed how BCCI asked him to play his last match of his career at the Wankhede Stadium at his home ground. He said he wanted her to see him play because his mother could only travel to that place because she was not well.

Sachin Tendulkar has completed the greatest batting career the game of cricket has ever seen. The batting great played his last match in the longest form of the game during the home Test series against the West Indies national cricket team at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Sachin Tendulkar hit an impressive half-century and ended up knocking 73 runs in the final Test.

With the Wankhede Stadium packed and chants of “Sachin Sachin” all to be heard, it’s fair to say his final Test in Mumbai seemed more than festive. The game was played from November 14–16 and the ending was perfect for him.

Talking about his last match, Sachin Tendulkar said that he told the BCCI to keep his last Test at Wankhede so that his mother could see why 24 years had moved to different places. Speaking about the 50th anniversary of the Wankhede Stadium:

“Before the series was announced, I met the BCCI and made a request. I asked them that I want my last match to be played in Mumbai for one reason: I have played cricket for many years—24 years in India and almost 30 years in total. My mother has never seen me play.

“At that time (during the Farewell Test), my mother’s health was not good. She could not go anywhere other than Wankde to see me play. I wanted her to see why I had been going to different places for 24 years. BCCI accepted the request very respectfully.

Talking about playing the final Test, he expressed his feelings about the kind of reception he got from the crowd and the West Indies. He talked about how the broadcaster played with his emotions by showing him pictures of his mother and other members of his emotional family. He added:

“When I came in to bat on the first day, the game was almost over. When I came out to play, the West Indies players gave me a lot of respect. The crowd gave me a warm welcome. It was me. It’s a bit emotional.

“There was a close-up of my mother. She didn’t realize she was being shown on the big screen. I was thinking that all these shots were important because they were the last six balls of the day. The broadcast director had a West Indies passport because I thought he was a West Indies supporter.
