Indian captain Rohit Sharma has promised to do his best to make India proud in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. The much-awaited marquee event will be held from February 19.

With just a month to go before the start of the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma was asked about the tournament while speaking at an event celebrating 50 years of Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Last year, Rohit Sharma led the team to victory in the T20 World Cup, ending the Indian team’s long wait for the ICC trophy. The right-handed batsman led the team from the front and finished the tournament as the second highest run-getter behind Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Earlier in 2023, the Mumbai legend led the Indian team to the final of the ODI World Cup, becoming only the fourth Indian captain to reach the milestone. Although he failed to lead the team in the 50-over World Cup, he is now eyeing his glory in the so-called Mini World Cup.

“We will try our best. It is always a dream to represent Indian team in any ICC trophy. We will start another dream. I am sure when we reach Dubai, 140 crore people will be behind us. We will try. We will do everything we can to bring the trophy back to Wankhede,” said Rohit Sharma.

“Whichever team you play, India, Mumbai or Mumbai Indians, the crowd will not disappoint here. When we won the 2007 T20 World Cup and celebrated here, that day I dreamed of bringing the World Cup trophy to Wankhede. Thankfully, we celebrated the 2024 T20 WC victory in Mumbai and Wankhede.”

“The atmosphere here is different. Even non-Mumbai players like to come and play here. The stands were full when we were celebrating and they are full even now. This is the specialty of Wankhede,” said Rohit Sharma.

Meanwhile, Team India is in Group A for the upcoming Champions Trophy. The other teams in the group are defending champions Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand. The Indian team will play all their matches in the UAE.

The Men in Blue will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. Their final league match will be against New Zealand on March 2. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
