Ravichandran Ashwin has made a bold statement against Washington Sundar after the all-rounder was selected for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Ashwin has hinted that Gautam Gambhir may go to any limit, even if it is biased, to include Sundar in the playing XI for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as he likes the spin a lot. Notably, India dropped Ashwin in favor of Sudar in the recent tour of Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his strong support for Gautam Gambhir for Washington Sundar ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

This decision did not please many as some said this call forced the Asean off-spinner to retire from international cricket in the midst of the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. However, Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted how crucial the left-right combination is in modern cricket, especially with the absence of an off-spinner in the team.

Left and right combinations are very important nowadays: Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, “Left and right-arm combinations are very important these days because there are no off-spinners in this team. Your left arm spinner is there. It is very important to rotate the strike. I feel Washington Sundar will play at number 8 for sure. There are two things. As far as I know he likes Gautam Gambhir a lot. He rated it, and certainly Gautam Gambhir endorsed it. If Washington 8 enters, your balance will change immediately.

Former India all-rounder Washington Sundar feels that if he makes it to the top five, it will be a real game changer as India can unlock new balance and flexibility. However, the way Gautam Gambhir is supporting Sundar has mentioned that there are chances of him playing in the top five.

Ashwin further explained, “I feel Washington Sundar will have a slightly higher role in the batting order. Playing forward at 4 or 5 and bowling gives you that balance. Think about it. If the balance of the off-spinner is in the top 5, the dynamic changes. It should be folded in the top 5, then it will open a whole new door for you. It throws up a lot of options.

Notably, Washington Sundar has so far represented India in 14 ODIs, scoring 315 runs at an average of 24.23, including a half-century. In his List A career, Sundar has 983 runs at an average of 21.84 in 56 innings. Batting at No.3 last year, he scored 152 runs against Delhi and later returned for the final two matches of the three-match Test series against New Zealand. However, New Zealand whitewashed India in that series.
