Rangers have signed defender Rafael Fernandez on loan until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old joined from French club Lille and the transfer includes an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

Fernandez came through Sporting Lisbon’s academy before heading to Portuguese club Aruca and then Ligue 1, and will give boss Philippe Clement more defensive options following a string of injuries this season.

Rangers have been on the hunt for a centre-back since December, with John Suttar ruled out of last month’s game against Spurs with injury, Dujon Sterling injured and Feyenoord loanee Neraisho Kasanwirjo ruled out for the rest of the season.

“I’m very happy to be here,” he said after sealing his move to Ibrox. It was a club I wanted to come to after hearing about the interest and I’m glad I’m finally here.

“My first impressions were very good, I met my colleagues, some employees and they all made it easy for me to start this new challenge.”

Clement added: “He’s a young defender who will bring a lot of attributes that will be useful to the rest of our team this season. He has a lot of potential, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Rangers technical director Nils Koppen said: “We have identified this window as an area of defense that we want to strengthen and it is great to be able to add Rafael. I am sure he will continue to raise his game at Rangers, and I look forward to seeing him try to play our defensive players in the coming weeks and months and into the next season.” .

Rangers boss Philip Clement has discussed the possible exits of Cyril Desers, Rabbi Matondo and Kieran Dowell.

Jersey boss Clement has said that the club needs to sell players in this transfer window.

Winger Raby Matondo, midfielder Kieran Dowell and striker Cyril Dessers have been linked with a move away from Ibrox.

“I will never talk about personal issues and names because it is always the right price for each player. It has to be a winner for everyone.

“It is important for the club (to sell players in this window). This is the decision of the club as it was during the winter. This is the situation for the moment.”
