The Congressional Progressive Staff Association this week called on congressional leaders to reduce their aides’ workweek to 32 hours on weeks when their bosses are out of town, but left-leaning senators are divided over the idea of ​​a shorter workweek overall.

Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who has previously introduced legislation that would mandate a 32-hour work week nationwide, presented the proposal to Fox Business’ Hilary Vaughn on Thursday.

“We’re seeing huge income and wealth inequality, people at the top doing incredibly well. And we’re seeing huge advances in artificial intelligence and technology. … I want to see technological advances that make you a more productive worker. Not just billionaires,” Sanders said. “And one way we can do that is to go to a 32-hour work week without pay.”

When asked how businesses would pay for a 32-hour work week and have to hire someone to work an extra day, Sanders did not respond.

“My employees work their hearts out because that’s what it means to be in public service, and I’m very grateful for the work they do,” Warren told FOX Business. “A 32-hour work week is a scary idea, but I understand that most of my employees don’t see a 42-hour work week month in and month out because they come in and work in the afternoon for the American people.
