London, January 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — A new survey from Ommedia shows that phishing scams are the number one security threat for smartphone users, with 24% of respondents saying they have been victims of such attacks. Phishing, fraudulent texts, emails or calls designed to get individuals to divulge sensitive personal information, remains a concern as cybercriminals continue to prey on unsuspecting consumers.

Omdia surveyed 1,572 consumers America, Asia & OceaniaAnd Europe in October 2024 For the fourth annual Omdia Mobile Device Security Scorecard. According to the survey, the next most common security issue is malware and viruses, followed by physical theft such as pickpocketing, hacking or extortion.

Omdia’s recent review of major premium smartphones includes Google’s (NASDAQ: ) Pixel 9 Pro and Samsung’s (KS: ) Galaxy S24, along with Apple’s (NASDAQ: ) iPhone 16 Pro and other Android-based devices; OnePlus 12, Xiaomi (OTC:) 14, and Celebrate the magic 6 Pro. Anti-phishing protection has been found to be a weak point on all devices as no one has successfully intercepted all phishing texts, calls and emails.

Synchronized spam calls for all Android devices from Google, Xiaomi, OnePlusHonor and Samsung have successfully flagged suspected spam calls before users return them, while the iPhone 16 Pro doesn’t get the same voice call protection.

None of the tools tested fully detect phishing emails from Gmail as spam, only detecting them as spam when sent from Google SMTP.

Despite loopholes in detecting phishing texts and emails, Google’s Safe Browsing protection tools successfully blocked the link, displaying a warning screen and asking for user confirmation to continue. Performance on browsers varied greatly: Samsung effectively blocked most links, including Internet Advanced custom URLs. Xiaomi Mi And OnePlus’ Internet browsers fail to warn users about known malicious links, highlighting the inadequacy of Android device security.

“Lack of security, especially the ever-increasing threat of phishing attacks, is eroding consumer confidence,” said Omdia Senior Analyst. Aaron West. “When consumers were asked if their trust had increased or decreased following the security issue, 73% said their trust in the smartphone brand and operating system developer had decreased.”

“Despite recent protections by some manufacturers, 100% protection against phishing attempts is difficult, given the seriousness of the issue and the potential impact on users. However, smartphone manufacturers can (shown by the advanced phishing protection capabilities available. ) and better phishing protection is fundamental.” They should have the line “Like voice call protection, and all Android devices that use Google Safe Browsing protections.” Holly HennessyChief Analyst, Omdia. “This should be combined with awareness-raising efforts by manufacturers and the wider industry to help consumers be aware.”
