Olympic gymnast Sunny Lee vows never to skate again after tragic first experience

US Olympian Sunny Lee may want to stick with gymnastics.

The gold medalist tried her hand at skiing for the first time this week, as seen on her Instagram story, but ended up injuring her face on the ice.

During her trip to Montreal, Canada, Lee shared photos and videos of her failed attempt at skiing. She says it was the last time she tried skiing.

“Skiing for the first time,” she wrote. “Omg never.”

A video of her lying on the ice, which was taken by her friend Samira Ahmed and re-shared to her own story, shows the gymnast laughing as she twirls on the ice. A caption on the video reads: “That’s why I walked away from the hall.”

While fans can certainly expect Lee to not compete in the upcoming 2026 Olympics in Milan, her struggles in figure skating are certainly not due to a lack of athleticism or coordination.

Lee is the 2020 Olympic all-around gold medalist and uneven bars bronze medalist and the 2024 Olympic all-around and uneven bars bronze medalist. In the year She won a gold medal for Team USA in 2024 and a silver medal in 2020.

She has received several prestigious sports awards and accolades, including being named the Female Athlete of the Year in 2021 by the Women’s Sports Foundation. She was also included in Time Magazine’s 100, the publication’s annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people.
