NYC subway riders express safety concerns amid high crime stories.
Amid a spate of high-crime stories, New York City subway riders are voicing fears for their safety, saying attacks on train cars are becoming a growing concern in the Big Apple.
“You never know what’s going to happen in these subway systems,” Haisley, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, told Fox News Digital.
Crimes on the subway used to happen mainly at night, but now “can happen at any time,” he said.

Haisley pointed out that the influx of people into New York City and progressive crime policies were largely to blame for subway crime. He specifically called out New York Governor Cathy Hochul for his failure to address issues related to prison and bail reform.
“We don’t feel safe on the subway,” one female subway rider told Fox News Digital.
Citing issues related to homelessness and the recent arrest of a Guatemalan immigrant in connection with the death of a woman who was set on fire, the subway driver said people are now more fearful of public transportation.
Another female passenger told Fox News Digital that she doesn’t think the subway is a “positive” experience, and that recent incidents of violence in the city are making her want to stay away from school.
He pleaded not guilty to the illegal charge of burning a woman sleeping in the light.
Several subway riders responded similarly when asked about the subway, with one young woman telling Fox News Digital that commuters in Queens and the Bronx are “scared to go home.”
Still, some said their safety was not a concern when riding in and around Manhattan.
Nigel, a Queens man who has ridden mass transit in New York City for more than 20 years, says he still loves the subway — but admits it needs more development to improve cleanliness and reduce homelessness.
He also advised subway passengers to be aware of their surroundings.

“I feel it’s safe. What you need to do – look at yourself. When you go to the subway and get up, don’t hold your phone in your hand. Look around you,” he said.
MTA Chairman Jano Lieber told Bloomberg News earlier this week that the idea of crime “has gotten into people’s heads” but that the trains are safe.
In the year Criminal attacks on the transit system increased slightly in 2024, and subway homicides doubled to 10 in 2023 from five last year. Overall, subway crime is down 5.4%, according to the NYPD.
