The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian national cricket team defeated the England national cricket team in the first five-match T20I at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, January 22.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian national cricket team took a 1-0 lead with 43 balls to spare.

India thrashed the Three Lions in Kolkata.

Team India played a brilliant brand of cricket in the T20I series opener. They bowled first and restricted the opposition to a paltry 132 runs.

Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each while Varun Chakraborty was outstanding as he took three wickets.

The run was very easy for the hosts as Abhishek Sharma showed a batting masterclass and smashed 79 runs. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma came in as runs were completed in 12.5 overs.

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav praised the bowlers for executing their plan well in the post-match presentation ceremony. And so he said.

“The energy, the way we started, set the bar. All the bowlers had their own plans and they executed them.

“(When selecting three spinners) we wanted to stick to our strengths, all three are doing a fantastic job.”

Suryakumar Yadav heaped praise on Varun Chakraborty and Arshdeep Singh for their continued good performances. He gave a special speech to the head coach Gautam Gambhir saying that he is giving a lot of freedom to the players. Suryakumar Yadav explained as follows.

“(Varun) is making things very easy, the preparation is on point.

“He (Arshdeep) has taken charge and is working consistently. He is being given a lot of freedom by Gauti Bhai. We have been working hard with the fielding coach.

Difference between India and England playing XIs from T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final teams

The India vs England XIs match in the 1st T20I at Eden Gardens from the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup reflected on the transition phase of both the teams.

The semi-final saw India’s top order of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, while Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya provided the pace bowling services as they linked the middle order with the back.

Spin-bowling all-rounders Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja provided stability with the ball and bat. India’s bowling department includes Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, providing a combination of pace and spin.

Meanwhile, in the T20I against the Three Lions, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma were the openers – replacing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who retired from T20I cricket post-T20 World Cup 2024.

The other batsmen in the line-up are Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh while the all-rounder duties are being handled by Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Axar Patel. Also, Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi and Varun Chakraborty were the three clean bowlers in the XI.

On the other hand, England’s semi-final line-up consists of experienced all-rounders like Moeen Ali, Liam Livingston and Sam Curran, with Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairst leading the batting line-up.

The fast bowling attack consists of Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan and Reece Topley, while Adil Rashid handles the spin duties. In comparison, England’s team featured a different mix in the first T20I against India, with Ben Duquette, Jacob Bethel and Jamie Overton making up the squad alongside Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood, none of whom played in the semi-finals.
