Mel Gibson says house burned in LA wildfires.
Mel Gibson revealed that his home was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires while recording Joe Rogan’s podcast.
The Oscar-winning movie star said his Malibu property was completely gutted and blamed California Governor Gavin Newsom for the problem.
The wildfire has killed at least 10 people and burned thousands of buildings, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.
A number of celebrities have described how they have lost their properties, and officials have warned that more strong winds could fuel the wildfires.
Gibson said he felt “comfortably ill” during his visit to Austin, Texas, to appear as a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience, because he knew his neighborhood was “on fire.”
“It’s horrible, it’s emotional,” Gibson told News Nation. Elizabeth Vargas reports.
“I am relieved of the burden of my belongings because everything is in cinders.”
The Braveheart star has lived in the property for 15 years and some of his neighbours’ houses are also “disappeared”, including the estate of close friend Ed Harris.
Gibson said the family followed evacuation orders and are safe.
in the Podcast with RoganGibson criticized the governor of California, saying that Newsom “did nothing” to “take care of the forest”.
“I think all our tax dollars went to Gavin’s hair gel,” the actor said.
Los Angeles is facing the worst wildfire in its history, with 31,000 hectares (12,500 acres) consumed and 180,000 people displaced.
Five wildfires are still burning in the LA areas of Palisades, Eaton, Kennett, Hurst and Lydia.
California fire chief David Acuna told Radio 4’s Today program that 10,000 buildings were destroyed. He also warned that the wind blowing in the coming days may cause more destruction in the area.
Republican President-elect Donald Trump has called for Democrat Newsom to resign over his handling of the crisis, saying the “best and most beautiful” part of the US is “burning to the ground”.
Newsom defended the response, saying state officials are “throwing everything in our hands” to protect communities.
A spokeswoman for the governor accused Trump of politicizing the disaster and said Newsom was focused on keeping people safe and making sure firefighters had the resources they needed.
US President Joe Biden has pledged more federal resources to help California after the “most widespread, devastating wildfire” in the state’s history.
