Liberal talk show host Bill Maher often says that liberals who promote tragedies remain silent when Democratic leaders are held accountable.

Wildfires have been raging there and elsewhere in Los Angeles County, burning more than 27,000 acres, destroying more than 10,000 buildings and killing at least 25 people in the Pacific Palisades area, leaving dozens of Californians homeless, including celebrities. .

While LA Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom have drawn some criticism of their leadership during the devastating fires, Maher argued in a TMZ interview that more critics should speak up and hold liberal leaders accountable.

“I’m with people who want to hold politicians accountable,” Mahder told the news outlet.

The comedian described many liberals as “hypocritical” when they say “we shouldn’t be talking about it right now.”

“It’s funny to hear that coming out of liberals’ mouths, because conservatives hate to talk after gun incidents, which conservatives always say after mass shootings. “This is not the time to be politicized. ‘ And then it’s never,” Maher said. “It’s time to talk about it.”

While he said there were other factors such as global warming that made the level of danger inevitable, he stopped short of saying that “mistakes” had been made.

“Was it always going to be bad? Of course,” Maher said. “Their arguments aren’t wrong. We built the city in a terrible place to build a city. Global warming will make things hotter and the weather worse. The winds are ridiculous. Yeah, I get all that. And they’ve made a lot of mistakes.”

“If you’re going to hold Bush responsible for Katrina,” Maher added, “you have to have some intellectual credibility to criticize your team for not doing it right. And you took a long time to earn that right.”

The HBO host also emphasized that such disasters “always seem worse than they could be” — a sign that more is expected of leaders.

“I think we should ask better,” argued Maher.
