The bill is set to be one of the first pieces of legislation sent to President Trump’s desk after twice beating the Legislature’s 60-vote threshold this month.
Introduced in the new Congress by Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., in the Senate and Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., in the House, it is named for the 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student. He was found dead on the University of Georgia campus in February.

The measure would require ICE to arrest and detain illegal immigrants who commit theft, robbery or shoplifting until they leave the country. States are allowed under the law to take civil action against members of the federal government who do not enforce immigration laws.

A Republican amendment adding assaults on law enforcement officers to the list of crimes that trigger ICE arrests was added to the Senate last week. The Upper House will vote Monday afternoon on whether to add “Sarah’s Law” as an amendment. The legislation, led by Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, would require ICE to detain illegal immigrants accused of killing or seriously injuring another person.
A final vote on the immigration bill is expected in the upper house around 6 p.m.

After that, the House will have to renegotiate the measure and approve the final version as amended by the Senate.
The bill was prioritized ahead of Trump’s inauguration on Monday as the new president is expected to make immigration enforcement a top goal of his administration.

The Trump administration has unveiled a number of measures it is taking on its first day in office, many of them in response to immigration issues. The incoming White House officials announced Monday that they will sign an executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants, in addition to a series of Day One measures to address the border crisis.
