In one of his final acts as US president, Joe Biden has issued beta pardons to Anthony Fauci, Liz Cheney and Mark Milley.

The move comes as President-elect Donald Trump vows to retaliate against his enemies list after reentering the White House on Monday.

Trump has threatened legal action against Fauci, the president’s former chief medical adviser, over his role in overseeing the US response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Miley, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has a long history of animosity with Trump and warned him before last year’s election that he was “fascist to the core”.

Cheney, a prominent Republican, campaigned against Trump in last year’s presidential election and served as vice chairman of the congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021 storm on Capitol Hill.

Biden said he was apologizing to members of Congress and staffers who served on the committee, as well as police officers who testified against him.

“Appallingly, public servants have been subjected to ongoing threats and intimidation for the faithful performance of their duties,” Biden said in a statement.

This is a developing story.
