Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of India’s T20 series against England, Mohammed Shami back in squad | Cricket news
Jasprit Bumrah is out for the upcoming T20 series against England in India, while Mohammed Shami is back after over a year out with injury.
Bumrah, 31, suffered a back injury during the fifth and final Test in Australia earlier this month and missed the second innings as the hosts regained the Boundary-Gavaskar trophy with a 3-1 series win.
He was ruled out of the squad as such, but Shami returned to the side after a knee injury ruled him out of the 50-over World Cup finals in Australia in November 2023.
Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has been left out of the 15-man T20 squad but may be rested after playing all five Tests in Australia, while batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill have also been left out of the Test squad.
Dhruv Jurrell and Sanju Samson are India’s options behind the stumps for the England series, while the hosts are led by captain Suryakumar Yadav.
India are yet to name their squad for the ODI series or the upcoming Champions Trophy.
World champions India will host England in five T20Is between January 22 and February 2, followed by a three-match One Day International series.

Atherton: England can take boost from Australia-India series
Sky Sports Cricket Michael Atherton believes England will take encouragement from the recent Test series between Australia and India as Ben Stokes’ side prepare to face both teams in the next 12 months.
Australia were bowled out for 295 in the opening Test in Perth before fighting back to win the series 3-1, but Atherton saw vulnerabilities in the hosts’ batting line-up, particularly the former England captain’s “optimist” who won the Ashes for the first time since 2010/11.
Travis Head and Yashavi Jaiswal were the only top-order batsmen on either side with averages above 35 – 56.00 and 43.44 – although former Ashes England batsman Steve Smith matched Head’s two centuries for the series, averaging a modest 34.88, with other big-name players, Virat Kohli (23.75), Rohit Sharma (6.20) and Marnes Labuschagne (25.77) is worse.
England will host India in a five-Test series this summer, starting June 20, before traveling to Australia for the Ashes in November.
“India’s top players Rohit, Virat and others combined with over-reliance on (Jasprit) Bumrah’s lack of form was ultimately the difference,” Atherton said on a recent Sky Sports Cricket podcast.
“From England’s point of view, I felt they would take some encouragement from both sides.”
