As Team India prepares to take on England in the next five-match T20I series, the focus is on veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami. The right-arm pacer has made a much-awaited return to the Indian squad for the upcoming series.

In the year He has not played for India since the World Cup finals in November 2023. He played the World Cup with an ankle injury and finished the tournament as the top wicket-taker. But Mohammad Shami had to pay a big price for playing while injured as he had to undergo surgery and was out for a year.

He made his comeback to competitive cricket a few months ago and was in contention to make the Indian squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, the selectors decided not to pick him in the Test squad before recalling him for the T20Is against England.

Mohammed Shami went through a grueling three-hour practice session with his Indian teammates on Sunday (January 19, 2010). As a precaution against a severe bandage on his left knee, the Indian bowler began his bowling practice by running short strides.

Later, he participated in field practice to test his knee. And it didn’t take long for Mohammed Shami to dispel concerns about his fitness as he produced a fiery spell as he took long runs. According to a report in PTI, the fast bowler troubled the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma in the nets with speed.

Mohammed Shami steamed for 45 minutes without needing help from the team’s physiotherapist or strength and conditioning coach. He was seen chatting with bowling coach Morne Morkel after the bowling session.

Mohammad Shami looked uncomfortable bowling in the nets, slouching into the dressing room, much to the dismay of many. Later, he returned to the ground and was seen reuniting with his former Bengals teammates as he carefully managed his bandaged left knee.

Meanwhile, Shami has been included in the Indian squad for next month’s ICC Champions Trophy. Shami, who is not fully fit with Jasprit Bumrah, is vital for Team India.

“I don’t think his performance has anything to do with white-ball cricket,” chief selector Ajit Agarkar said in a press conference while announcing the squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. We were trying to bring it to Australia.

“Unfortunately, his knee didn’t allow him to play four-day or five-day cricket. As for the white ball, I think he played most of Syed Mushtaq Ali’s games and some of Vijay Hazare’s.”
