Former Indian national cricket team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has spoken about the decision to make Shubman Gill the vice-captain of the Indian team in 2025. XI.
The Indian national cricket team recently announced its squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Young batsman Shubman Gill has been given the role of vice-captain and will serve as Rohit’s deputy in the tournament.

But Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma reportedly took the decision keeping the future in mind. Shubman was included in the management team after the T20 World Cup 2024 and was retained as the vice-captain of the team in the white-ball format by the selectors for the tournament.
He was the vice-captain in the last series – Ravichandran Ashwin against Shubman Gill.
Ravichandran Ashwin talks about giving Shubman Gill the vice-captaincy, says he won’t comment on whether it was the right call or not. The batsman also emphasized that he is the vice-captain in Sri Lanka and added that it is a future call. He said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.
“I don’t want to get into whether the decision was right or not, but the point taken was right. He was the vice-captain in the last series and he was also sometimes given the post in Test matches, though I could be wrong there.
“This is a very prospective call. They will see who can be the leader in the future. They said now Axar Patel is the vice-captain in T20s. (But) there could be competition between Axar Patel and Jadeja for the same position. .”

Ravichandran Ashwin talking about doubts about the place of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in the XI said that 100% player in the XI has been made vice-captain. He added that the stability in the team is good and Gill can learn from the seniors. He added:
“Between Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, the latter is the reserve. Both Rishabh and KL can play together. But 100 per cent, the player who will be in the eleven has been made the vice-captain.”
Stability is good at the moment and if for some reason Shubman has to be captain in the future, he can lean on guys like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah – there are a lot of guys.
