Indiana Attorney General Sues Sheriff Against Federal Government Over Illegal Immigration
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita announced on Friday that his office has filed charges of illegal immigration against the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.
“I filed a lawsuit against St. Joseph County Sheriff (William) Redman and his department for their continued practice of refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities,” Rokita told reporters at a news conference in South Bend, Indiana.
He continued, “This includes failing to properly notify ICE of the release of illegal aliens, as well as refusing to honor ICE detainers. This deliberate decision not to cooperate with federal immigration authorities is providing safe harbor to criminal aliens who need to be removed from our country. And this state.”
ICE detainers refer to people whom ICE requests local authorities to detain until an agent takes them into custody.

He said the sheriff’s action will bring more illegal immigrants into St. Joseph County and commit crimes.
“As attorney general, I don’t want to sit back and watch law enforcement take action,” he added.
Rokita said the sheriff’s department remains in non-compliance with Indiana law after several attempts to negotiate with the sheriff.
“Despite the charges, Indiana will continue to support law enforcement,” he said, “but we will also hold accountable those who deserve to be held accountable.”
“Until the law is upheld and we put our people first against illegal aliens, my office will not stop working on this issue,” he said.
Despite Trump’s promise to use ‘all weapons’ to oust DPP governor, ice jail returns ‘criminals’.
Rokita said if the sheriff’s department cooperates, his office will “happily drop the charges.”
He added that his office is investigating possible labor tracking networks in the region, following reports of migrants pouring into communities.

The charges come as President Trump unveils his mass deportation plan, and the White House says hundreds of immigrants have been illegally removed from the country since he took the oath of office on Monday.
