Indian film actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed in an altercation with an intruder at his home on Thursday and underwent surgery at the hospital, media reported.

The 54-year-old actor was rushed to the hospital from his home in the country’s financial and entertainment capital Mumbai, where he lives with his film star wife Kareena Kapoor and his two sons.

Two of the six wounds were deep, one near his spine, Indian News Agency quoted a doctor at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital as saying.

Indian media quoted police as saying that the intruder entered the house at 2.30am, stabbed Khan and then fled. A woman working at Khan’s house was also injured in the attack and is undergoing treatment, he said.

Police are investigating the assailant.

In a statement, Khan’s wife Kapoor said the family is safe and said, “Police are conducting a proper investigation and have asked the media and fans to be patient and not make any assumptions.”

A film producer, Khan has appeared in nearly 70 films and television serials. He is the son of former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore.

He has won numerous awards for his roles in Hindi cinema, including seven Filmfare Awards. In the year In 2010, he received India’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri.
