India produced a dominant performance to record a 295-run victory over Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium in Perth. With the win, India ended Australia’s unbeaten run at home since 2018, most recently suffering a 0-3 series defeat in New Zealand.

The match ended quickly in the final session of Day 4, with India needing just five more to get the last two wickets of Australia. Washington bowled Sundar Nathan Lyon for a duck before Harshit Rana dismissed Alex Carey for 36 to seal the win as Australia posted 510 for 238.

Although the grit of India had a rough start

India’s first innings was very far from being bowled out for a paltry 150. Josh Hazlewood wreaked havoc with figures of 4/29, while debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy fought back valiantly with 41 runs in his maiden outing. Rishabh Pant contributed 37, and KL Rahul showed resilience before being controversially dismissed.

However, the Indian bowlers turned the tide in Perth’s fading light. Jasprit Bumrah (3/30) led an impressive fightback claiming the prized wicket of Steve Smith for a golden duck. Debutants Harshit Rana (1/16) and Mohammad Siraj bowled Australia out for 104 to give India a slender 46-run lead.

Jaiswal and Kohli shine in the second innings

India capitalized on their narrow advantage in the second innings with a commanding batting display. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had earlier been dismissed for a duck, redeemed himself with a stellar 161, his fourth Test century. Alongside KL Rahul (77), Jaiswal forged a 201-run opening partnership.

Virat Kohli then piled on the misery for Australia In his 30th Test hundred, he finished unbeaten on 100. India declared at 487/6, Australia set a big target of 510 runs.

Australia falter under pressure

Australia faced a tough task and got off to a disastrous start to their chase, losing three quick wickets at the end of Day 3 before Nathan McSweeney’s forgettable debut ended with a duck, while Marnes Labuschagne fell convincingly LBW.

Despite best efforts from Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47), Australia’s batting fell to India’s relentless bowling. Bumrah (3/42) and Siraj (3/51) were instrumental in dismantling the Australian line-up.
