New York Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered Democratic Party flags to fly at full staff for Monday’s inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump as the nation mourns former President Jimmy Carter.
“Tomorrow, we are all Americans as we observe the centuries-old traditions of Inauguration Day,” Hochul said in a statement to the New York Post on Sunday.
“As a result, I am directing flags to fly at full staff throughout New York State on January 20th and return to half-staff on January 21st to honor the late President Carter,” she added. “Regardless of your political views, the American tradition of peaceful transition is something to be celebrated.”
The governor’s directive comes amid President Biden’s order to fly flags at half-staff on all government and public buildings and grounds across the country for a 30-day period of mourning following Carter’s death on Dec. 29, 2024, which includes his inauguration.
