Google has invested another 1 billion dollars in AI developer Anthropic

(Bloomberg) — Alphabet Inc.’s Google is backing artificial intelligence developer Anthropix with an additional $1 billion, raising its stake in one of the most promising rivals to OpenAI.

The new funding comes in addition to the more than $2 billion Google has already invested in Anthropic, said a person familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because of personal matters. Google has a commercial agreement with Anthropic that covers the use of a suite of online tools and services. Amazon.com Inc. He is counted among his biggest fans.

Anthropic declined to comment, and a Google spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

San Francisco-based Anthropic is known for its cloud family of large-scale language models that rival OpenAI’s GPT. Like its peers, the company is raising large sums to expand its computing capabilities and continue its investment in the race to advance AI. The new deal comes weeks after Bloomberg News reported that Anthropogenic is in advanced talks to raise $2 billion in a funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.

The FT first reported that Google’s additional investment comes from OpenAI, Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp. The $100 billion AI datacenter project — dubbed the Stargate project — is in partnership with SoftBank Group Corp. and other backers.
