Glenn Maxwell silenced the Sydney crowd with a Virat Kohli-esque gesture during the BBL 2024-25 knock.
Glenn Maxwell delivers a scintillating attack during the Big Bash League 2024-25 play-off match between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars. Glenn Maxwell signaled the crowd to quiet down with a spectacular catch, which reminded many of his former RCB teammate Virat Kohli.
The play-off between the Sydney Thunder and the Melbourne Stars is being played at Shaw Grade Stadium in Sydney, where the losing team will be eliminated. In particular, the Stars opted to bowl first after winning the toss of the bat. The Thunder scored 135/7 from their 19 overs at the ENGIE Stadium on January 22.

In the 7th over of Sydney Thunder’s innings, Matthew Gilks tried to hit Usama Mir’s delivery for a six but miscued the shot. Glenn Maxwell, who sits at long off, leaps to take a sharp catch. Gilles scored 26 runs off 16 balls with three boundaries and one six.
After taking the catch, Maxwell performed the silence sign to mark his wicket, putting his finger to his lips and asking the crowd to be quiet – a move reminiscent of Virat Kohli’s signature crowd-silencing move.
The Big Bash League’s official account shared a clip of Maxwell’s gesture on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Glenn Maxwell just told the NGE Stadium crowd 🤫 #BBL14.

Matthew Gilks survives after TV umpire overturns catch decision
Earlier, Gilks was spared after being caught off the bowling of Peter Siddle by Tom Curran. The umpires ruled that the ball had touched the ground. The game was suspended due to a lightning and thunderstorm weather warning. After a brief delay, play resumed, with the match reduced to 19 overs a side.
“Oh what a thing, good catches (this winter) low and heavy and Curran got his hands under it,” Mark Howard said on Fox Cricket.
“Giles remains to see the judge but he looks very innocent. The jury is deliberating.
Legendary wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist said: “There have been a few this summer, across all formats, again, you can see what you want to see in which part of the change you’re put.
“He was definitely carrying it but it felt like he was going out again and he didn’t have full control of the ball and at that point it touched the grass and the third umpire was good enough to say no.”
Thunder fail to appeal or review after Peter Handscomb kicks Knicks for keeper
At the time of writing, Melbourne Stars were at 29/3 in 6 overs, with Marcus Stoinis (6) and Glenn Maxwell (0) struggling at the crease. Sam Harper had just 6 balls, including one four from 3 balls, when he was bowled by Nathan McAndrew.
Peter Handscomb could have been out for a duck after touching the ball over the keeper. But the Thunder were unable to appeal or review, giving Handscomb a second chance. Finally caught LBW by Tom Andrews in the 5th over with a run charge and gone for 11.
