Gael Monfils made history by winning the ATP Tour singles title at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

The 38-year-old Frenchman, who won his first tour crown 20 years ago, defeated Zizou Bergs 6-3 6-4 in the final.

“Great satisfaction,” said Monfils, ranked 52nd. “Winning this 13th title is very special. I don’t win often. I’ve been playing for over 20 years and he’s only won me 13 times.”

Of his place in history, the former top-10 star added: “It’s a different record. You’re always happy to get a record but I want to do more, play less, so why not lose a little later.”

Monfils will face 17-year-old compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Pericard in the first round of the Australian Open.
