For millions of users across America, Tik Tok shouts Trump as the app goes dark.

TikTok went dark for users across the US late Saturday after the app notified users of the ban, which took effect just days before President-elect Trump took office.

Users who tried to use the app on Saturday night received the following message: “Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable. A law banning TikTok has been passed in the US, which means you can’t use TikTok for the time being.”

The app gave a shout-out to Trump: “We are fortunate that President Trump has announced that he will work with us on a solution to restore Tik Tok after he takes office. Please stay tuned!”

The TikTok app was unavailable on the Apple and Google App Stores at 10:50 p.m. EST because of a bipartisan bill signed by President Biden last spring that requires TikTok’s Chinese parent company to provide ByteDance. Sell ​​out the forum on Sunday or face a US ban. Internet hosting services are also prohibited from providing the service to American users.

Lawmakers who support the legislation say the measure is needed to protect national security and protect Americans from what they say is propaganda from foreign adversaries.

Hours ago, the app informed users that the law banning TikTok would take effect on Sunday.

Management said the ban would “force” the company to make its service “temporarily unavailable”.

“We are working to restore our service in the US as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your support,” the statement said. “Please stay tuned.”

The White House said this week that Biden did not intend to implement the ban, with Trump taking over on Monday.

The social media platform said Sunday would “go dark” without a “definitive” statement from the Biden administration.

“Today’s announcements by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice fail to provide the transparency and assurance necessary for service providers who are critical to protecting over 170 million Americans’ access to TikTok,” TikTok said in a statement. X.

But White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre described TikTok’s interest as “spurious” and said there was “no reason for TikTok or other companies to take action in the next few days before the Trump administration takes office.”

ByteDance had nine months to sell TikTok to an authorized buyer, but chose to take legal action against TikTok.

Trump said the ban would need to be “reviewed” before making a decision and that it was “very likely” he would grant TikTok a 90-day extension from January 19. If there is an extension, Trump said on Monday it would be “probably” announced.

The law allows the sitting president to extend the deadline by 90 days if the sale is in progress, though ByteDance has previously said it would not sell TikTok.

In a video on Friday, TikTok CEO Xu Zee Chew thanked Trump for his “commitment to work with us to find a solution to keep TikTok in the United States. This is a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship.”
