Elon Musk and technology leader Sam Altman got into a war of words

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has suggested that Elon Musk cares more about his businesses than the country, not long after calling Musk “the most inspiring entrepreneur of our time.”

Following the announcement of a new $500 billion artificial intelligence infrastructure project involving OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank, Musk cast doubt on the project’s ability to deliver on its promises, saying the group of companies lacked the funds to complete the project. The project, called Stargate, will see the trio of companies build additional centers in the US for the development of AI, which promises to increase productivity by automating work.

According to Musk, the new project is “in good standing” because it doesn’t lack funding, and in a post on X, Altman responded differently by picking up the new project from OpenAI. “Softbank is safe under $10B. I have that on good authority.”

“Wrong, as I’m sure you know,” Altman wrote of Musk’s claim that OpenAI didn’t have the money to fund Stargate. “Would you like to visit the first site about to launch?” asked Musk.

“I understand that what’s best for the country isn’t always what’s best for your companies, but I hope you put (America) first in your new role,” Altman added.

Altman jabs at Musk after the tech entrepreneur-turned-presidential adviser posted criticisms of Altman, calling him a “liar” and suggesting the OpenAI CEO is greedy and anti-Trump, even though he recently said he had the same views on the president. He has changed and is excited to see what Trump is doing for the country.

Another post Musk shared, claiming that Altman’s OpenAI is funding the news outlet Axios, accused the post of being anti-Trump. Musk also highlighted Altman’s 2016 post — saying he’s “getting back to work on a new project to stop Trump” following Trump’s 2016 primary win.

In addition to trying to paint Altman as the anti-Trump, Musk also offered criticism of OpenAI, which Musk has helped but is not currently involved with. Last year, Musk sued OpenAI twice, alleging that Altman and the company breached the contract they signed, agreeing that the company’s primary goal was to benefit the public, not make money.

“Altman literally testified to Congress that he won’t get OpenAI compensation and now he wants $10 billion!” An image of Musk acquiring an equity stake in OpenAI was posted on X alongside the Reuters headline image. “What a liar.”

Another post shared by Musk included an image of a meth pipe with the caption, “Leaked image of research tool OpenAI with $500 billion figure for Stargate.”

“Both are true!” Altman responded. “I don’t think he’s a good person or treats us fairly, but you have to respect the man, and he pushes us all to be even greater.”
