Dean Windass: Ex-Hull and Bradford striker diagnosed with stage 2 dementia | Football news
Former Hull City striker Dean Windass has been diagnosed with stage 2 dementia.
Former Manchester United and Blackburn defender David May shared the news on BBC Breakfast on Friday morning, as he spoke of his concerns about the situation among his former players, along with former Leeds midfielder and mental illness campaigner John Stiles.
Stage 2 dementia causes memory impairments and mild cognitive decline.
May posted on X confirming that he had spoken to Windass and had been given permission to speak about the 55-year-old’s condition.
His post read: “FYI, I talked to @DWindass10 last night and asked for his permission. He was 100 percent behind it, citing stage 2 dementia. Dino did an article for a national newspaper, which will be published soon.
Windass – who has also played for clubs including Bradford, Aberdeen, Oxford and both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday – scored the winning goal against Bristol City in the 2008 Championship play-off final, which saw Hull promoted to the Premier League for the first time.
He posted a video on X of himself singing along to Glenn Campbell’s hit ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’, then posted: “I’m really ok, glad to know I’m sane. I hope other families get the help they need. The people they’ve lost.”
