The Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir on Friday 24th January at the BKC Ground in Mumbai witnessed a sensational performance by Ajinkya Rahane. The Mumbai captain was dismissed first and returned to the dressing room before being called back by the on-field umpires.

After dismissing Jammu and Kashmir’s lower order in the first session, Mumbai were 86 runs short. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 54 runs for the first wicket but the Mumbai team suffered a setback. The team slumped to 86-5, putting pressure on Rahane to get them out of trouble.

The incident happened in the 25th over of Mumbai’s second innings. Pacer Umar Nazir bowled a short delivery that edged Ajinkya Rahane for class and the batsman caught it to the keeper. Rahane went back to the dressing room and all-rounder Shardul Thakur came out to bat.

However, confusion arose when the umpires started checking for off-ball, but the footage was only available to the third umpire. Ajinkya Rahane returns to the crease and sends Thakur to the crease. The umpires later asked Rahane to wait but he did not listen to their instructions.

He sends the relevant picture to BCCI – Nitin Goel

The live telecast did not show the no-ball, and the production team stated that they could not get the footage. Match referee and third umpire Nitin Goel attributed the delay to communication issues.

Nitin Goel revealed that he tried to talk to the on-field umpire on walkie-talkie after Ajinkya Raha was dismissed. Goel confirmed that it was a clear ball with no doubts about the decision and added that he would send the relevant footage to the BCCI.

“When I tried to reach the umpire on the walkie-talkie, the umpire was on a different channel. So he took some time to talk to the field umpire. Rahane himself appeared on the screen, which showed that he did not hear him. The umpires asked him to wait. There was no ball and there was no doubt. For BCCI.

The ICC dictates what the umpires have to say about batsmen

According to the Laws of the Game, an umpire must intervene if he finds that the batsman has left the wicket without being given a sticker. He remembers the side of the field and the beat.

“A strike may be called at any time until the ball comes for the next delivery, except for the last wicket of the match, in which case it shall be until the moment the umpires leave the field.”
