Biden administration says TikTok will ‘go dark’ on Sunday without ‘definite’ confirmation it won’t enforce ban

TikTok said on Friday that the social media platform had gone “dark” on Sunday without “definite” confirmation from the Biden administration that the ban would not be implemented.

“Today’s announcements by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice fail to provide the transparency and assurance necessary for service providers critical to protecting over 170 million Americans’ access to TikTok,” TikTok said in a statement. X.

He continued, “Unless the Biden administration makes an immediate and decisive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers, TikTok will unfortunately be forced to go dark on January 19.”

The White House said earlier this week that Biden did not intend to implement the ban, which would take effect on Sunday, with President-elect Trump taking over on Monday.

The US Supreme Court on Friday upheld a law banning TikTok unless the Chinese-owned company ByteDance sold it by Sunday, citing national security concerns over its ties to China.

Trump has said he needs to review the ban before making a decision.

“The decision of the Supreme Court was expected, and everyone should respect it,” he said. “My decision on TikTok is not too far away, but I should have time to evaluate the situation. Stay tuned!”

During the presidential campaign, Trump said after joining the platform that he would “never ban TikTok.”

Also on Friday, TikTok CEO Xu Zicheu thanked Trump for his “commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States. This is a strong stand for the First Amendment and opposes arbitrary censorship.”

Chew is expected to attend the inauguration on Monday.

Trump tried to ban TikTok during his first term in office.
