Ankit Bawne has been banned for one match after his controversial dismissal from the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy.
Maharashtra batsman Ankit Bawne has been handed a one-match ban for protesting during the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy group match against Services. As a result, Baune had to sit out Maharashtra’s Group A clash against Baroda from January 23 in Nashik.
Ankit Bawne’s suspension has been announced ahead of Maharashtra’s Group A clash against Baroda in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25. The incident took place during Maharashtra’s fifth round match against Servis in the absence of 32-year-old player Ruturaj Gaikwad as the stand-in captain.

The right-hander refused to leave the field after being given a stick by the umpires. Controversy erupted when Shubham Rohilla was bowled before he slipped off the bowling of Amit Shukla despite clear evidence that the ball had gone up.

Due to the fact that the match was live and not televised, there was no Decision Review (DRS) available, even though Ankit Bawne was unable to review the decision for 15 minutes on the pitch, leading to a delay in the match and a one-match ban for the Maharashtra batsman in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25.
The situation escalated and match referee Amit Sharma and Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni had to intervene in November last year to bring peace to the field.
Stand-in captain Ankit Bawne had to walk out after hitting 73 runs off 104 balls with eight boundaries and one top-ball.

After the incident, Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni criticized the poor standards of umpiring in domestic cricket. He asked why the players are expected to be fined, but the referees do not get any kind of penalty even though they have repeatedly made mistakes.
Extending his support to Ankit Bawne, Kulkarni emphasized that it is right to be upset with his players for such mistakes.

Sulakshan Kulkarni said, “Players face fines and reprimands. What about fair evaluation by judges? Why do the same wrong judges play the sport of judging and crashing? When there are errors of this nature, anger is justified.
There is no playoff hope for Maharashtra in this Ranji season.
Then Maharashtra’s regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was playing for India A in Australia in that Ranji Trophy 2024-25 match, expressed his dismay at the poor umpiring of Bawney’s dismissal in the Ranji Trophy.
In particular, Maharashtra is currently the second to last team in Group A with only 8 points from 5 matches in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25. They now have no chance of qualifying for the playoffs of Ranji Trophy 2204-25.
Group A leaders Baroda, second-placed Jammu and Kashmir and third-placed Mumbai have a good chance of reaching the finals of the ongoing first-tier competition.
