An Altadena resident talks about saving his home, surviving the Eaton fire
A survivor of the devastating Eaton fire that ravaged the Altadena area of Los Angeles County recently spoke about his experiences fighting the blaze.
Altadena resident Justin Christie spoke with Fox News Digital about the experience Saturday afternoon. As of Saturday evening, the Eaton fire that started on Tuesday was only 15% contained.
Christie said his family has lived in the area since 1967 and has never seen anything like the Eaton fire.
“(I saw) tons of fires on this hill,” Christy recalled. “When I saw this, when I went out on the road and saw the flames on the hill, something told me this was different.”

“I was really scared, and I started thinking about what I should do to prepare for it.”
“I was particularly shocked to see one of the palm trees on fire,” Christie said. He quickly put all the family members into the car and drove them away.
“No tree has ever caught fire in a fire,” he said. “And that was when he said, OK… we’re in big trouble.”
Christy later drove to the house to check on the condition of the house – when he realized that no one would put out the fire in the palm, Christy decided to take matters into his own hands and fight the fire himself.
“I thought my house was going to go away a lot,” he recalls. “From 8 o’clock in the evening until 12 o’clock in the evening, this house burned next to me. This house was the last thing that threatened me.”
“When that one finally calmed down… I felt a little relieved.”

But Christy said that sense of relief was short-lived when another neighbor’s garage caught fire. Although Christie’s house was not destroyed by the fire, the resident described the whole situation as “very shocking”.
“It’s heartbreaking. It’s enough to cry,” Christy said. “So many people have lost everything.”
“And I never thought… we’ve been here so long… I’ve always thought we’re good enough if we can’t reach the fire.”
Looking back on the experience, Christy describes the sounds and sights of the wildfire as “amazing.”
“Shattered glass, explosions from gas lines, people’s propane tanks, cars burning,” he explained. “Looks like several freight trains are coming your way.”
All in all, Christie said it was nothing short of a miracle that their house survived the Eaton fire.

It was a miracle that I caught the fire… the wind died in one instance. “And if he hadn’t….he would have grabbed this tress next to me, set my house on fire, and I’d be done with it. And there were many times when I wanted to leave, but I didn’t. I stayed.”
“If I had gone, the house would be gone. Completely gone.”
