A passenger on a German high-speed train got stuck to the outside as it exited the station before getting ready to board, police said.

The 40-year-old had boarded an ICE train in Munich without a valid ticket and wanted to take a smoking break at the Ingolstadt station.

But he lingered too long on his cigarette and missed the chance of the train doors being closed.

He then jumped onto a bracket between two carriages and held onto the cables, speeding the train up to 282km/h towards Nuremberg until federal police stopped it 30km away.

Eyewitnesses alerted the authorities and contacted the train driver, and a time limit was stopped at Kinding in Upper Bavaria. It was a six-hour drive from downtown Lübeck to the north.

The Hungarian-born man told police he left his luggage on the train during his cigarette break and didn’t want to part with it.

A police spokesman said he was “amazingly” unhurt after his daring ride.

“A police officer who happened to be traveling with the train found the 40-year-old Hungarian passenger and brought him to the train. Nuremberg Central Station.

The man is now being investigated for benefit fraud.

It is also expected that he may be charged with “disturbing operations”, which is classified as a simple administrative offense.

Federal police have warned the public not to risk their lives on German trains.
