A fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant prompts evacuations and the closure of Highway 1.
Monterey County’s North County Fire Department sent out an emergency alert system alert Thursday evening to say it was responding to a fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant in central California and that some areas were under evacuation orders.
Moss County Sheriff’s Office released Emergency evacuation orders South of Elkhorn Slough at Moss Landing, North Molera Road and Monterey Dunes Way, and west of Castroville Blvd and Elkhorn Road due to a fire at the Vistara Power Plant.
Monterey County officials said the severity of the blaze is not yet known, but officials are warning residents to close Highway 1 and homes in the Moss Landing area behind the plant.

“Out of an abundance of caution, NCFPD strongly urges residents in zones MRY-B047 and MRY-B053 to close windows and doors and shut off air systems. Please evacuate to allow emergency vehicles to respond,” the statement said. he said.
There is currently no estimated time to reopen. Meanwhile, northbound traffic is being detoured onto Highway 183, and southbound onto Struve Road.

A temporary evacuation center has been set up at the Castroville Recreation Center (11261 Crane St., Castroville) for evacuees in need of assistance.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and will be investigated once the fire is out.
