A big loss for South Africa! Gerald Coates retired from cricket.
South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the ongoing SA20 tournament due to a left leg problem. However, Coates is still considered for selection for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in Pakistan and Dubai.
Coetzee returned from injury and made his competitive debut for Joburg Super Kings (JSK) following a groin injury sustained during the Test series against Durban Supergiants in Sri Lanka. He took two wickets for 32 runs before being dropped from JSK XI for the next match.

Gerald Coates has been ruled out of the SA20 after straining his left hamstring. The Joburg Super Kings have announced that they will undergo a medical assessment and rehabilitation. They wished him a speedy recovery in a statement on Instagram.
“Joburg Super Kings fast bowler Gerald Kotezi will not take part in the Betway SA20 due to a left hamstring strain. He will undergo further medical evaluations and rehab. Sending all positive vibes and wishing him a speedy recovery ⚡💛” read the statement.
Gerald Coetzee is expected to replace the injured Henrich Noertje in the Champions League squad.
South Africa have faced several injury challenges, with several key players sidelined. Gerald Coetzee has been tipped as a replacement for the injured Henrich Noertje for the Championship title. Lungi Ngdi and Wian Mulder are back in the squad but the squad’s options are becoming more limited.
Othniel Baartman, Nandre Berger and Lizard Williams have not been included in the Proteas squad for the marquee tournament. Berger is dealing with a lower back stress fracture while Williams is recovering from a knee injury.
The South African campaign began on February 21 against Afghanistan
The Champions Trophy will be held from February 19 to March 9: Pakistan will host the tournament at three venues in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi, while India will play in Dubai.
Eight countries will participate in the tournament and it will be divided into two groups of four. Group A includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand while Group B includes England, South Africa, Afghanistan and Australia.
South Africa’s campaign begins on February 21 against Afghanistan in Karachi, followed by a match against Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25. They will finish their group stage against England on March 1 in Karachi. The semi-finals will be held on March 4 and 5, and the final on March 9.
South Africa won the 1998 ICC Championship in Bangladesh. This remains the only ICC event win in any format. South Africa beat West Indies by four wickets in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
