Brooke Shields has apologized for Tom Cruise’s postpartum depression, saying he attacked her ‘because he could’.
Twenty years after receiving criticism from Tom Cruise for her “irresponsible” approach to treating postpartum depression, Brooke Shields is “finally” releasing the apology she received from the Golden Globe-winning actress.
Golden Globe nominee After an explosive interview with former “Today” show host Matt Lauer in 2005, she detailed it in her new memoir, “Brooke Shields Not Allowed to Grow Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.” Gun actor attacked her “because he could”.
During the interview, Cruise said that the shields prescription for postpartum depression “doesn’t cure anything.”

“There’s no such thing as a chemical imbalance, there’s a misrepresentation of what I’m saying about Brock,” Cruise told Lair at the time. “She doesn’t understand the history of psychiatry.”
In response, Shields wrote an op-ed New York TimesCalling Cruz’s comments “an insult to mothers everywhere.”
“I couldn’t bear the sound of[daughter]Rowan crying and dreaded the moment my husband would bring me,” Shields wrote. “I wanted her to disappear, I wanted to disappear, at my lowest point, I thought of swallowing a bottle of pills or jumping from the window of my apartment.”

“I couldn’t believe it when my doctor told me I suffered from postpartum depression and prescribed Paxil, an anti-depressant. Relapses drove my car into a wall with Rowan in the back seat, but the drugs, along with weekly therapy sessions, saved me and my family.
“Finally, Tom Cruise apologized to me… he apologized, and he said he felt insulted by Matt Lauer and basically attacked me.
Shields said Cruz’s comments show a clear “lack of awareness” about postpartum depression.
She added: “Comments like those made by Tom Cruise are a disservice to mothers everywhere. “It was wrong to take medication for depression, and to suggest that I should take vitamins and exercise instead shows a complete lack of understanding of postpartum depression and childbirth in general. If there is humor Mr. Cruz, nothing good can come of it. Much needed attention to a serious illness.” Let’s hope it will.

In her book, Shields admits that if the comments had been made before she became a mother, she would have “remained silent.”
“I used to ignore his ridiculous screams,” she wrote. Entertainment Weekly. “I could have been content to sit back while this very famous person hijacked my experience to advance his own[misguided]agenda. I was content to let his behavior speak for itself.”
But Shields insists on fighting for herself and “women who suffer irrational and dangerous comments from an uneducated actor who speaks out of his depth.”
“Tom Cruise finally apologized to me,” she wrote. “Not in public, which would have been the right thing to do, but he came to my house and apologized, and he said he felt cornered by Matt Lauer and attacked me because he could. It wasn’t the world. A very nice apology, but that’s what he could do, and I accepted it.
A representative for Cruz did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
