According to initial information from the scene, the parents and their four children were on their way to ski on a nearby hill.

But around 11:30 a.m., the family said they heard gunshots coming from a house on a hill near the 10400 block of Birchwood Pike. The mother said she saw snow flying off the ground a few feet away from her one-year-old son.

The parents immediately looked in the direction of the bullet and shouted at the man, identified as Cook, to stop firing. The man said the family was on the property, but the family replied that they were not.
