Los Angeles wildfires: Big businesses donate, offer services to victims of inferno

Thousands of Angelenos were forced to flee their homes. Like a wild fire through the area. Some were able to get home safely, while others lost everything. Several large companies, including Fox Corporation, are joining the relief effort with financial and service donations.

Here are businesses giving back to Los Angeles and how you can join the relief effort:

SoCal Credit Union

Southern California Credit Union is offering $1.25 million in interest-free loans to help people affected by the wildfires. The company is making a $10,000 donation to CU Aid, which aims to support credit unions, their employees and their communities during difficult times.

“We are deeply committed to supporting our neighbors during this difficult time,” company president and CEO Dave Gunderson said in a statement. “Through our fundraising program and our donation to CU Aid, we aim to provide immediate and meaningful assistance to those affected by the wildfires.”

Charities Credit Union of Southern California will match employee donations up to $5,000 through Jan. 17.

SpaceX

On Friday, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company would provide free Starlink terminals to areas of Los Angeles affected by the wildfires.

Musk told a Fox 11 reporter in an ad about X that he praised Starlink and that the area had “absolutely no cell service, which is the only reason viewers were able to see it.” .”

Airbnb

Airbnb is offering free temporary housing to those affected by the wildfires in the LA area. The property rental platform announced on Wednesday its partnership with 211 LA, a longtime Los Angeles area nonprofit.

“Stays are completely free for guests and are supported by the generosity of Airbnb.org and Airbnb hosts — many of whom offer their homes for free or at a discount on Airbnb.org,” Airbnb explained.

The company is helping hosts who offer their homes by waiving service fees and providing damage protection and liability insurance with every booking, Airbnb said in a statement.

The NFL family has pledged $5 million to help communities affected by the wildfires. The two-team LA-based league announced the donation was “led by individual contributions from clubs and ownership groups including the Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Houston Texans and the NFL Foundation.”

Disney is donating $15 million to Los Angeles wildfire prevention and rebuilding efforts. The company said it supports organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Disney is pledging to help its employees in the Los Angeles area through an employee relief fund.

Verizon is giving up domestic calling, texting and data usage for prepaid customers. The telecommunications giant is also making its stores free Wi-Fi for those who need it and can charge it.

CVS is diverting calls to pharmacies that are closed due to the fire to safe locations and those that are open. The company is offering alternative delivery options to help CVS Specialty patients. In addition, CVS Health is working with local organizations to provide support on the ground.

Fox Corporation

Fox Corporation is donating $1 million to American Red Cross wildfire relief efforts. In addition, FOX Corporation, which continues to be a partner in the annual disaster relief program, is encouraging viewers to do their part to help families affected by the devastating wildfires and to help families in need of immediate assistance.
