Trump calls for federal workers to return to work in person

As promised on the campaign trail, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order forcing federal workers to return to their homes.
The order comes after Trump announced plans to roll back former President Joe Biden’s move to keep federal workers in the hybrid workforce through 2029.
“Heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of government shall take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements as soon as possible and shall require their employees to return to work in person at their duty stations full-time, unless department and agency heads deem it necessary to exempt them,” the order said. It reads.
Agencies should resume full operations in person by 5 p.m. on Friday, the order said.

Elon Musk heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and is tasked with finding ways to reduce government spending and improve the effectiveness of federal initiatives.
One of those initiatives is ending remote work and looking at it as a way to voluntarily reduce the requirement for federal workers to return to the office.

“Requiring federal workers to come to the office five days a week would result in a voluntary shutdown that we welcome—if federal workers don’t want to come, American taxpayers don’t have to pay for the privilege of a COVID-era stay at home,” Musk wrote in an op-ed published with former DOGE co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy. The Wall Street Journal last month.

In addition to his return to work, Trump signed an executive order that freezes the hiring of federal civilian employees, which applies to the entire executive branch.
The order states, “As part of this prohibition, no vacant federal civilian position may be filled at noon on January 20, 2025, and no new position may be created except as provided by this memorandum or other applicable law.” “
The ban excludes military personnel and positions related to immigration enforcement, national security and public safety.
