‘Expedited Removal’: Trump Expands DHS Expedited Deportation Powers
The Trump administration is dramatically expanding its authority to quickly deport illegal immigrants, one of the swiftest moves to fulfill the administration’s promise to launch a mass deportation campaign.
The Department of Homeland Security’s announcement on Tuesday removes restrictions on the accelerated removal authority that took effect in March 2022 during the Biden administration. Until the new memorandum, authorities were limited to exercising their powers within 100 miles of the border or for recent arrivals.
Expedited removal allows for the speedy removal of illegal immigrants who do not meet the criteria for asylum or who have not applied for asylum. The new power would eliminate the 2022 restrictions, which would have allowed agents to remove those who could not prove they had lived in the U.S. for at least two years.

“Currently, immigration officers may apply for aliens apprehended anywhere in the United States up to two years after the alien entered the United States if the alien arrived by sea and other conditions for expedited removal are met,” the notice, signed by Acting DHS Secretary Benjamin Huffman, said. .
“In particular, the full implementation of the expedited removal authority will allow DHS to effectively and efficiently address and ensure the speedy removal of significant aliens who are in the United States illegally without entry or diversion, and who are unable to enter, remain, or receive relief or protection from the United States,” it says. .
The memo comes a day after DHS rescinded a Biden-era memo that limited the places where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers could detain illegal immigrants. Another memo ordered a review of the use of humanitarian amnesty to admit refugees.

This comes on the heels of several executive orders signed by President Donald Trump declaring a national emergency at the border, halting refugee resettlement, ordering non-asylum removal, building a border wall and deploying the military to the border.
