Former M.B. All-Star Kenny Lofton hails slugball’s reimagined approach to the sport: ‘Baseball’s high golf.’

Much of the lost art in the game of baseball is being revived this year, and one former Major League Baseball star is happy to advise.

Slugball is a reimagined way to play the sport, and six-time MLB All-Star Kenny Lofton, who serves as a consultant for the company, is seeing the same thing as a recreational version of another sport.

“It’s almost like High golf “Baseball,” Lofton told FOX Business Digital by phone. “It’s the competition, and you get guys who want to play the game and have fun with it.”

Slugball is co-founded by a Philadelphia-based partnership that includes a former MLB player and Philadelphia Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. and his brother David Amaro. Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, Victos Bats and Blast Motion are product partners and Evan Kaplan, MLB Players, Inc. The Managing Director will serve as an advisor alongside Lofton.

The premise of the reimagined version of baseball is to reinvent situational hitting in an exciting format that will allow players of all ages to participate in 4-on-4 tournaments at various minor league parks in New Jersey, Ohio and New York this year.

Situational hitting is not a priority in today’s big league game, as it was when Lofton played the game. Viewing power as the main factor behind hitting hurts the former high-average outfielder, which is why he hopes the Sluggball format can bring the situational, hit-and-miss relationship forward.

“I think the part I love about this whole thing is you can make the little guys a part of the game,” said Lofton, who played 17 MLB seasons and collected 2,428 hits. 2,103 games, he said. I agree that I am not. This game is made up of power, power, power. it’s me. That’s not the only thing that makes this game special.

“You don’t have to be a very powerful hitter, but you can still know how to handle the bat, and Sluggball brings together a small group of guys who are in that situation and go out there and do something and have that competitive edge. A lot of people want to give back.”

The rules of Sluggball are simple. Initially, teams of six to eight players brought their respective seasons to the stadium and registered for their events. The team’s lineup for the games — two four-inning games are guaranteed — will have four hitters, and at-bats are limited to eight swings or 35 seconds.

Each game consists of four rounds of scoring, with points scored by hitting the ball based on the conditions of each round. That side of the pull, to center, opposite field, and around the corner, depends on which side of the plate the victim is on.

A batted ball only counts if it is hit out of bounds on the side of the round and remains in fair territory. Most team points in the round are won, and no runs or pitches are required – just hits.

Sluggball hosted an invitation-only pilot event at Trenton Thunder Ballpark in September 2024, with Phillies legend Larry Bowa on site as an MLB ambassador, signing autographs and interacting with attendees. The event saw a great reception from the players and their supporters, leading to a bright future for 2025.

A 65-year-old who knows how to work the bat can score in that situation, Lofton said, referring to the age of one of the pilot event players. “You can hit the ball to center, you can hit the ball to left field, you can hit it to right field when it’s time. That’s what makes me happy.

“We know it’s BP, but again, I always say you’ve got to learn how to work the at-bat. … Maybe Sluggball can get that opportunity to say, ‘Hey, this is an important part of the game that’s pushed for a reason. Analytics and Ivy League guys.'”

Sluggball currently has. Six events are available To sign up, with “Opening Day” on May 10 at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. Fee is $1,795 per team, and includes a two-game guarantee with a chance to play in the championship game for $3,000 in prize money.

Players will receive team uniforms on the field: UnderArmour shorts and shirts and a Bills-branded hat. A catered lunch and cash bar, post-event player performance analysis, autographed memorabilia from guest MLB alumni and more are in store for each team’s experience.

So, like Top Golf, those still in love with the game can get their competitive juices flowing with those who want to do the same.

While Slugball seeks to bring back a lost art, the game of baseball is also expanding its inherent camaraderie.

“That’s the one thing I miss about the game — the camaraderie of going out there every day and hanging out with the guys,” Lofton said. “You’ve got like-minded people who want to enjoy the game. Again, you don’t have to be very athletic. You just have to know how to swing the bat and put the ball in different places. Don’t worry about pitching in and out of the ballpark.”
