Turkey’s efforts to identify the citizens who lost their lives in the Bolu hotel fire continue.
A day of mourning is being held for the 76 people who died in a fire at a popular ski hotel in northwestern Turkey.
The fire broke out at 3:27 p.m. (00:27 GMT) in the wood-paneled Grand Cartel Hotel in Bolu city, where 234 people were staying during the busy holiday season. It took 12 hours to destroy.
An investigation has been launched into the matter and there are conflicting reports about whether the hotel is compliant with security standards.
Nine people, including the hotel owner, were arrested.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is expected to visit the ball on Wednesday, said those responsible for the fire’s negligence “will be held accountable.”
In Turkey, flags are flying at half-mast to remember the victims of the fire, and the first funerals are taking place.
Search and rescue teams are making last-ditch efforts to find the remaining bodies.
In addition to the dead, 51 people were injured in the fire, Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu said. One was being treated in intensive care and 17 people have recovered.
An image circulating in Turkey shows people trying to escape a burning building with linen hanging from windows.
The cause of the fire is yet to be found, but initial reports suggest that the fire started in the restaurant room of the hotel’s fourth floor and spread to the top floor.
The Bolu governor said the hotel’s remote location and freezing conditions took more than an hour for fire engines to reach.
The hotel was last inspected in 2011. In 2024, the tourism minister said there was no concern about the hotel’s fire safety before Tuesday’s disaster.
However, according to the Turkish Council of Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), according to regulations, an automatic fire extinguishing system is required and one of the photos of the hotel showed that it was not installed.
He added that it was unclear whether other laws were followed, but “it was understood that the detection and warning system did not work and could not determine escape routes,” according to survivors.
The Bolu mountains are popular with skiers from Istanbul and the Turkish capital, Ankara, which is roughly 170 km (105 miles) away, and the hotel was busy at the start of the two-week school holidays.
